How to bring a tournament prepared with Vega into Regulus, how to produce TRF files for FIDE and other programs, how to make a backup. Other pages: Create a tournament, Manage a tournament.

Import and export are found in:

  • the Tournaments page, in the menu ▾ next to New tournament;
  • the Reports tab of each tournament (export of that tournament).

Vega .vegx yes no Archive of tournaments saved with Vega 8.
Vega .vegz no no Vega 11 format: not readable, see below.

From Vega to Regulus

Why .vegz files cannot be imported

Vega 11 saves tournaments in the .vegz format, encrypted: only Vega can open it. Regulus therefore does not import it. From Vega 11 you export instead the FIDE report in TRF format, which is a standard text file.

Importing a TRF exported from Vega 11

  1. In Vega 11, export the FIDE report of the tournament. Vega produces two files: FIDE-<name>.txt (TRF 2016) and FIDE-<name>-26.txt (TRF 2026). Use the one ending in -26: it also contains Italian rating and FSI ID, the pairing-allocated bye value and forbidden pairs.
  2. In Regulus, Tournaments page: menu ▾ → Import from Vega (.vegx, TRF) and select the file.
  3. Check the To check list that appears after the import, then open the tournament.

What to check after import:

  • Number of rounds. Vega often does not write it in the file: in that case Regulus uses the rounds already played and flags it. Correct it in the Details tab.
  • Names. Vega writes first and last name in a single field, without saying which is the last name ("Lorenzo Di Blasio"): Regulus keeps them as they are, without rearranging.
  • Last round without results. If in Vega the last round is paired but not played, in Regulus it arrives as a confirmed round to be completed with results.
  • Player details. The file contains FIDE rating, FIDE ID, federation, title, sex and date of birth; Italian rating and FSI ID only in TRF 2026. Club is not included.
  • Score. Only 1 / ½ / 0 scoring is supported: other systems are flagged.
  • Tie-breaks. Regulus recalculates the standings with the 2026 FIDE rules: compared to Vega the values may be different.

The dates of the rounds are also imported (without the time, which the format does not include).

Importing the Vega 8 archive (.vegx)

Tournaments saved with Vega 8 in .vegx format are imported the same way, with the same command. The .vegx contains all tournament details, including Italian rating.

Exporting TRF

The TRF (Tournament Report File) is the FIDE format for submitting tournaments for rating approval and for exchange between programs.

From the Tournaments page: menu ▾ → Export TRF 2016… or Export TRF 2026…, choose the tournament (those on your device and those online you arbitrate) and press Export.

From the tournament: Reports tab → Export TRF 2016 or Export TRF 2026.

The file is named after the tournament (for example tournament-social-2026-trf26.txt) and contains:

  • header: name, venue, federation, dates, arbiters, time control, number of rounds, colour of board 1 at round 1, dates of rounds;
  • the players with their details, points, standings position and results round by round;
  • only completed rounds: a round with missing results is not exported.

Which to choose:

TRF 2016 TRF 2026
Date format dd/mm/yyyy (like Vega) yyyy/mm/dd
Italian rating and FSI ID no yes
Bye value, pairing system, tie-breaks no yes
Forbidden pairs no yes
Read by almost all programs programs updated to 2026

For rating approval, follow your federation's instructions on which format to send.

From Regulus to Vega

Not yet available: Regulus does not write Vega's format. To bring a tournament back to Vega you will be able to use the .vegx export, planned (Vega 11 opens .vegx files).

JSON backup

Regulus without an account saves tournaments only in the browser. The backup protects them and lets you move them to another computer or browser.

  • Full backup (JSON) (menu ▾ on the Tournaments page): all tournaments on your device and the player archive, in a single file.
  • Export tournament (JSON) (Reports tab): just that tournament.
  • Import JSON backup (menu ▾): restore a backup. If the tournament already exists the app asks if you want to overwrite it.

The backup also contains birth dates: keep it safe and do not publish it.

HTML page to publish

Reports tab → HTML page to publish: a file with club header, standings and pairings of the last round (with date and time, if entered), to upload to the club website. It does not contain birth dates. With an account you can instead publish the tournament directly online (see Create a tournament).
